From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. During a House Select Committee hearing this week, experts were asked to comment on the Chinese Communist Party’s threat to American agriculture.

Former National Security Advisor, HR McMaster told U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse he was very concerned about several land and building purchases near sensitive sites …

McMASTER … “I describe in my written testimony, the Three Cs of cooption, coercion and concealment. Coopt, by trying to build dependencies from U.S. agriculture on the Chinese market. And then, hey, once you’re in, then to use that for coercive purposes.”

Typically, McMaster says in dubious ways …

McMASTER … “The commercial aspect of this is often tied to the United Front Work Department, and arm of the Ministry of State Security, which forms organizations that look innocuous, that promote U.S.-China dialogue and economic discourse, in the area of agriculture in particular, in the American heartland.”

Another aspect, McMaster says, is their dependency on Chinese investment which gives them coercive power …

McMASTER … “I think you’re quite right to be concerned about this Congressman Newhouse. And I think, what you’re doing, what the committee is doing, to pull the curtain back and to shine the light on this behavior, I think is the most important first step.”

The hearing provided an overview of how the relationship between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China became a threat to our security, economy, and values.
