Sustainable Beef Pt 1

I’m Bob Larson. Beef, it’s what’s for dinner … might be your favorite commercial slogan, but it’s also a slogan that triggers a lot of finger pointing towards the cattle industry for things like being bad for us and for the environment.

But, Cattlemen’s Beef Board Chair Jared Brackett says he loves it when the conversation turns to “sustainability” in the beef industry …

BRACKETT … “Because I think it allows us to continue to tell our story, which we don’t always do a good job of it. If you look at the number of multi-generational farms and ranches that, to me, just demonstrates how sustainable our operations really are.”

It’s hard to argue, Brackett says that we aren’t incredibly efficient …

BRACKETT … “18% of the world’s beef is produced by 6% of the cattle in the United States. That’s a big number. And, then if you run it another direction, it takes almost three head of cattle to produce what one cow can do here in the United States. So, we know we’re efficient, we know we’re being sustainable, so we’ve got a great story and I think our consumers are rewarding us for that.”

But in spite of all that, Board CEO Greg Hanes says we’re still targeted …

HANES … “The beef industry is still getting blamed for destroying the planet, you know, for greenhouse gases and all these things, so that’s where it’s important, I think, just research that’s been done through the Checkoff really shows that that’s not the case.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the sustainability of the U.S. Beef Industry.
