Soils are amazing! Life as we know it would not exist without them, as they provide countless services that benefit all humans. Clean air and water, the clothes on our backs, habitat, and food for plants and animals are just a few things we can thank soils for. These 'goods and services' provided by soils are called ecosystem services. We need soils for countless reasons, including they are the lifeblood of crop agriculture. As people continue to study soils, the list of their benefits to us and the environment continues to grow! Speaking of studying soil, how about analyzing its DNA. Grain farmer, Steve Pitstick. Science reveals that there is a whole universe of microbiology lying under our feet that can be revealed and used to improve not only farming but our lives.
