Jim Jasper heads up Stewart and Jasper Orchards, an almond grower, and handler in the area of Newman in Stanislaus County. He's got some retail stores and he's expanding into a grocery store chain.

“We've got a store in Modesto, and one on I-5, and one right here at the plant. But now we're starting to get into a few stores and we've been up in the Northwest for about a year now, and now we're moving into Northern California and into Southern California with a line of Almonds. We call it Jake's Almonds and that's named after her grandson,” noted Jasper

And Jasper said they're also selling product online, especially Amazon. And that's because people are doing a lot more shopping online, especially during the COVID pandemic

“Their getting stuff delivered to their homes. So we would like to build that value added business a little bit, you know, we never want to stay status quo. We don't need to be the biggest. And my dad always told me you don't need to be the biggest, but just try to be the best,” noted Jasper.

In more news, growers may be thinking about pre-emergent herbicides this time of year, hoping for rain, which is needed to activate those herbicides. Of course, those with micro sprinklers can use that strategy.
