Full Circle Farming

Last week I shared with you the story of Fiscalini Farms, which is a dairy farm that not only produces milk and cheese, but also produces enough electricity for 300 homes. But there’s even more to the story. The byproduct from the methane digester that produces the electricity is a fertilizer that goes back on the crops to grow the dairy feed. Here’s Brian Fiscalini.

Fiscalini… “So that by-product is a very nutrient-rich liquid that we then use to irrigate our crops.”

This saves conserves water, reduces their fertilizer needs, and allows them to complete a full nutrient circle.

Fiscalini… “We like to advertise and educate people on what full circle farming means for the Fiscalini family. And that is that we grow the crops that feed our cows, that produce not only the milk that is used for our cheese operation, but also the cows that produce the manure that fuels our digester, that then that byproduct is reused as fertilizer for the crops. So we like to say that, you know, on our operation, everything pretty much stays here. The only thing that leaves is, is fluid, milk, and cheese.”
