Who would guess Cuba known for it's poverty and corruption is a leader in plant biotechnology, In fact Cuba now houses one of the most progressive institutes in the world, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology or CIGB that is leaving many wealthy nations, like the US, virtually in the dust when it comes to capitalizing on genetic modification to improve agricultural production. It seems that Cuba's scientists are intent on producing crops that are extremely hardy and disease resistant like GMO rice and corn and they do it without the back lash from activists. The CIGB Center has also become famous in the field of biotech medicine by developing a Hepatitis B vaccine that has been now sold to 30 countries, along with a meningitis B vaccine Naturally there are those that worry that the CIGB is simply a front for biological weapon, but I would be more inclined to think Cuba has made inroads to human cloning. Maybe that explains why Castro never seems to age. I'm Susan Allen and this is Food Forethought,
