I’m Bob Larson. Navigating the coronavirus safety procedures is something every industry is facing these days, including those in agriculture.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says the task at hand is all about keeping employees healthy and that’s not a simple thing …

NEWHOUSE … “Trying to implement some of the necessary health procedures in agricultural settings is not easy, but I see a lot of farms doing the best they can to provide a safe workplace for their employees, and so good efforts are being put forward to do that.”

Between challenges at packing facilities and with workforce housing, Newhouse remains optimistic …

NEWHOUSE … “You know, we’re struggling through this like everybody else and I think we will ultimately get to the other side of this in good shape, but the underlying thing that I think makes people nervous about the future is, will those markets be there for our ag products when we need them?”

Newhouse says farmers will do what they need to do to make it through …

NEWHOUSE … “And that’s what, I think, that people are understanding that if we’ve got to go through the social distancing and mask wearing and all those kinds of things in order to there, okay let’s do it. And so, I think a lot of people are determined that they’re going to make that happen so that we can get this economy rolling again.”

Listen tomorrow for more on agriculture’s struggles and what Washington state’s new rules mean to the industry.
