Colorado has fewer farmers than it did a year ago, but overall acres being farmed has not

changed.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service released its annual FARMS AND LAND IN FARMS report and we asked Bill Meyers, Director of the Colorado NASS Regional office to break it down for us.

Meyers: “ Every year we make an estimate of the total number of farms in the state and the nation and the number of acres of land that are being utilized for agriculture. In Colorado we estimate that there’s 38,700 farms down slightly from 2018. We estimate that there’s 31.8 million acres that are land in farms. And that was unchanged.”

The average size of a Colorado farm was 822 acres, compared to 817 acres the previous year. Meyers says that can all be seen at the agency’s website: nass.usda.gov.

Every year the office releases county estimates around this time and the estimates for corn, soybeans and sorghum out. They can also be seen at the NASS.usda.gov website.
