Pears and National Nutrition Month Pt 2

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. March is National Nutrition Month and Pear Bureau Northwest is once again calling on everyone to play along with the #WhatsInYourFruitBowl campaign through social media …

STEPHENSON … “There will be two contests. One will be just a sweepstakes where you can enter through our website, and the other will be on Instagram, you know, where you post a picture of your well-stocked fruit bowl. I certainly do it myself, so I will be participating and filling my fruit bowl every week this month.”

The Pear Bureau’s Kathy Stephenson says she tries to practice what she preaches …

STEPHENSON … “I have a well-stocked, I’ll include some of my apple friends and bananas, but pears will be the hero in my fruit bowl for sure.”

And, Stephenson this year’s pears stored very well so there should be plenty …

STEPHENSON … “We have some wonderful pears, green, red Anjou, as well as Bosc are still available. So, yes, there’s ample product available and we should have that certainly through the month of March, possibly going into that June-July period this year.”

But as always, Stephenson says, make sure your pear is ripe …

STEPHENSON … “It ripens beautifully by putting your pears in the fruit bowl on the counter. Once they are ripe, we obviously recommend people to put them in the refrigerator to extend their shelf-life. And, of course, we say “check the neck” so that you do know when your pear is ripe.”

Stephenson says it’s all about encouraging frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables to improve our health and have a little fun while we’re at it.
