Helping Pistachios Get the Dormant Rest Needed if the Winter is on the Warm Side

Bob Beede is a UCANR Emeritus farm advisor, Kings County, now working as a private consultant for pistachio and walnut growers, two products known as Surround, as well as calcium carbonate products. They may work or not work.

“With the amount of money that investors and growers now have in these perennial crops, nobody wants to farm an entire season without having given it their very best effort,” said Beede. “And when the temperatures are on the warm side during the winter you may ask yourself whether or not you're doing everything in your power to try to optimize the return on your investment.”

“And there also may be different perspectives offered to growers from various individuals, such as crop advisors about the efficacy of the rest enhancement treatments,” Beede noted.

However, Beede does give a slight caution based on the lack of research that shows efficacy. “We in the university do not yet have a long-term replicated trial to be able to claim that they meet the 95% confidence criteria.
