With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. The Washington Wine Commission will soon be launching a competitive grant program that will expand its reach and support of viticulture and enology research in our state.

Wine Commission Research Director, Melissa Hansen says this new program goes above and beyond current efforts …

HANSEN … “So, the statewide research program is administered by Washington State University. So, the money goes there and they put in the right accounts. So, it has been very difficult in the past for the researchers to truly collaborate outside of the state because there’s no way to get the money to that outside researcher.”

Hansen says this should benefit our research efforts tremendously …

HANSEN … “This new competitive grant program that the Wine Commission is launching is really designed to step up that collaboration and be able to now expand our reach so that if we have a WSU scientist that has identified another partner some place else that could add to the project. Now we have a way to got to that out of state researcher and say hey, we would love for you to collaborate on this project and here’s money directly we can send to you to help with that collaboration.

Hansen says the more the merrier …

HANSEN … “So, it will greatly expand our reach and it compliments, just perfectly, with the ongoing statewide programs.”

Listen tomorrow for more on this new research program from the Washington Wine Commission.
