01/11/06 Sauvignon Blanc

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and on today's program we are going to explore the grape Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Blanc is a grape varietal that everyday is becoming more widely accepted as an alternative to Chardonnay. It is a wine that is best when drunk young which suits our times and our impatience with waiting for wines to come to the most desirable age for consumption. With Sauvignon Blanc we have a wine that most often made in a drier style and has very good crisp acidity making it a great candidate to pair with many foods. It tends to vary stylistically from region to region in the world and that is part of its charm. If you taste a restrain French wine it will probably be drier and less aromatic than the showy wines of the same varietal from New Zealand. Somewhere in between are the wines from California and Washington. The later two which tend to vary most by producer, make them interesting to build a wine tasting around. All regions are worth seeking out and tasting side by side. As you gain appreciation for Sauvignon Blanc you will most likely gain appreciation for the stylistic differences and realize that not only is wine a mood thing but most likely there is a style of Sauvignon Blanc for every mood. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
