This week lamb and wool producers from across the nation are meeting in New Orleans for the American Sheep Industry Association's 154th Annual Convention. ASI executive director Peter Orwick says it's the first time the convention has been to New Orleans and they're expecting a big turnout.

"This week we're expecting 500 and it'll be one of our top crowds" said Orwick. "It's the first time we've ever been in the Big Easy and we have a lot of interest and people looking forward to attending this year's convention."

He says the 2018 farm bill was one of the best pieces of legislation for the sheep industry in over 30 years. One area of success was the animal health title. Specifically, legislation ensuring sheep producers have access to animal health pharmaceuticals.

"The number one gain was an opportunity for permanent funding for pharmaceutical development for minor uses and the sheep industry fits that qualification" said Orwick. "It was our top priority going into it and it's an opportunity that will affect every sheep operation in America."

He says another win in the farm bill for the sheep industry was the continuation of wool fabric provisions which benefits wool mills and the promotion and education ASI does.

During this year's annual convention in New Orleans, ASI will also be honoring the recent past chair of the house agriculture committee, Mike Conaway of Texas with the organizations Joe Skeen award. Recognizing Conaway's committed to the U.S. sheep industry.
