12/08/05 Hay hauling mistake

Hay Hauling Mistake Sometimes taking certain jobs is not always the smartest thing to do. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back to tell you about my lack of thinking. One night many years ago I was doing what teenage boys do besteating Mom's cooking and watching television when the phone rang. My first mistake was answering, the guy on the other end was Dad's hay hauler and he needed someone to help him load hay so he could catch up on his work and haul Dad's hay. Well, he sounded pretty desperate and if he called me I knew he was, so I said I would help. That was mistake number twoit was clearly a case of alligator intake overloading canary exhaust. The next day I did a fine job of riding in the truck to the haystack, but it all went south when I put on the hay chaps. I couldn't even figure out how to set and move the hay elevator so I wasn't working around a corner. The bales got heavier by the minute and I don't know who I felt sorrier forthat poor man trying to teach me the easy way to handle hay or me for being there. I just couldn't make myself believe those two words belonged togethereasy and hay. After about an eternity of my inept ability and my brain telling my body we could be done if it worked harder and my body telling my brain we wouldn't even be here if it had done its thinking job properly the truck was finally loaded and I dragged myself to the seat in the cab. We drove around the haystack and there was another truck; I almost bawled my head off when he saidnow we'll load the bigger one. I'm Jeff Keane.
