Newhouse Talks DACA Legislation Pt 1
With today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Bob Larson. Growers in our state that rely on farm labor to bring in their crops every year are keeping a wary eye on the other Washington to see what happens with DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, legislation.Representative Dan Newhouse says in spite of some reports, it's become clear to them the President wants this done ...
DAN NEWHOUSE ... "As you remember last week he instructed a group of Senators and Congress members, a bipartisan group, to negotiate, come to terms on a deal. He wants this thing fixed and so we've been working very hard to do that."
Newhouse says they are currently working on some common-sense border security measures ...
DAN NEWHOUSE ... "What many of our colleagues have come up with together is something called the USA Act. It does provide for U.S. border security measures such as enhanced technology, it includes physical barriers, increased manpower, not just a wall. I think the definition of what the wall is has come to mean several different things, but enhanced border security is what the President has made clear he wants in order to sign any DACA legislation so we've made every effort to address that."
The USA Act, the Uniting and Securing America Act, is also intended to protect DACA recipients from deportation.
After much back-and-forth last week between President Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a DACA fix was thought to be on shaky ground.
Listen tomorrow for more on what may or may not be in the works as the immigration battle continues.
