High Protein and Exercise A weight loss study was just reported in The Journal of Nutrition. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back with some of the results. A four- month weight loss study by the University of Illinois and partially funded by Beef Checkoff Program dollars tested 48 women in four different groups. The adult women were divided into two diet regimes, one consisting of high protein, low carbohydrate and another using high carbohydrate, low protein foods. Both groups had five servings per day of vegetables and two to three of fruits. Each of these diet regimes had a group of 12 women that were encouraged to walk 30 minutes five days a week and another 12 participants that were required to walk 30 minutes five days a week and 30 minutes of stretching and weight lifting two days per week. The results I read in The Journal of Nutrition showed the high protein and high protein plus supervised exercise groups lost an average 20 pounds while the high carbohydrate and high carbohydrate plus exercise groups lost 16 pounds average. The highest weight loss was seen in the high protein plus exercise group while the lowest weight loss was the high carbohydrate, suggested exercise group. The high protein plus exercise women had the most fat mass loss, while showing no significant loss in muscle mass. Lets see, I think lean beef would work great as a high quality, high protein source. This study reaffirms to me beef could play an important part in a well-balanced diet and exercise program to lose weight properly. I'm Jeff Keane The Journal of Nutrition August 2005
