10/17/05 Iowa farmer brings wit/wisdom to Idaho

You have to register by this Friday for the annual meeting of the United Dairymen of Idaho. The three day session in Boise begins October 31st. This year's keynote speaker is Jolene Brown. BROWN "The three biggest lies we're told are 'work hard someday this will all be yours' and 'I'm going to retire' and 'don't worry about your brothers and sisters they have their business, they're not interested in this one." Brown often leaves her Iowa corn and soybean farm traveling the country dishing out wit and wisdom. Her two themes at the Boise meeting will be 'it's a jungle out there' and 'the pitfalls and snares that break up a family or business.' BROWN "And actually what I focus on there are the ten stupid things that we do to break up a family or business. There are just some things that we need to do when times are good so we have the tools when times get tough." She gets to talk to and listen to a lot of farmers and ranchers. Brown says they don't seem concerned about roller coaster prices, they accept it as part of agriculture, but they are concerned about ever-changing rules and regulations. BROWN "It gets real tricky when the rules today are not the rules tomorrow because the people have changed and there's more of the decision makers not in agriculture than those who have a tie to it."
