Still no announcement on who will be President-elect Donald Trump's selection for Agriculture Secretary.

It remains the last cabinet position other than Veterans Affairs that Trump hasn't filled.

Sources say that North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp remains a top candidate for the post.

Other names being floated include Idaho Governor Butch Otter, Nebraska agribusinessman Charles Herbster, who chaired the Trump ag advisory council, and West Texas farmer and former president of the American Soybean Association, Wade Cowan.

Genetically modified crops may not be popular among certain segments of the population, but those responsible for their growth see the technology as an essential tool.

A survey of 282 U.S. farmers shows 98 percent think GMO seeds, typically bred to be resistant to things like certain crop protection chemicals, are the best way to lessen their environmental footprint, and 69 percent believe the technology leads to higher yields.
