I'm Susan Allen While commodity prices are influencing how much wheat is planted, growers know that they need to maximize their returns per acre. Variety selection and how growers manage those varieties is critical when it comes to return. That's according to Steve Sebesta, Westbred Regional Commercial Manager.

SEBESTA: Growers need to be as knowageabl as possible on their wheat agronomics and do their research before making purchasing decisions they should evaluate new varieties for their area and look to published studies and yield trial results to find the varieties with the characteristic they need to succeed on their farms.

And Winter Hardiness is extremely important.

SEBESTA:The yield potential of a variety is obviously a huge consideration that growers need to take into account. Aside from yield when I talk to growers, winter hardiness is on e of the biggest if not the biggest consideration they are looking for in a good Winter wheat.

And then there is straw strength.

SEBESTA:Another big challenge growers are seeing in wheat is the issue of standablity as we see many varieties in the market lately with less than desirable straw strength. The identification of varieties that offer excellent winter hardiness and straw strength is one of the key things growers need to look at when making planting decisions.

A good knowledgeable seed supplier will help maximize yields.
