Things to Consider With Upcoming Livestock Event

Although the possibility of animal rightists showing up and demonstrating at a county fair or youth livestock event in your rural area may be remote, it always pays to be prepared.

Animal Agriculture Alliance Director of Communications Hannah Thompson has some advice for those who plan livestock shows to consider

Thompson: "So the few things if you are an event organizer that you can be doing. Reach out to your local media outlets let them know what is going that the show is happening. That way if they hear about it from another group — they've heard about it in a positive way from you first. That also involves having some people on tap to speak to the media. That could be exhibitors, people from your fair committee, a veterinarian — someone who is there and trained and comfortable in front of the media and can talk through some animal care issues and concerns anyone might have. You can also prepare by reaching out to your local law enforcement. So just let them know that you are having an event with animals and you've heard that things have happened at other events and you'd like to be prepared. Ask for their advice, and what they would suggest you do and what steps they suggest you would take. It is also a positive, great opportunity to invite them out to the show and learn more about your industry."

Thompson also suggests monitoring online conversations by doing a search for your event and location several days prior to the show. She continues

Thompson: "So it is really about preparing — again hoping for the best. Hoping this isn't an issue, but if it does become an issue you are prepared."
