Shed Hunting
It's that time of year again, today we are going to talk about elk shed hunting with avid outdoorsman, RJ Oxford."Well we start looking for elk sheds the middle of March, the first of May. The big bulls will drop late March, first part of April. We find the majority of our elk sheds on South facing slopes, southeast facing slopes are usually better. They'll usually leave there first, grass comes out on it first, Southeast slopes usually tend to be a little more rock, and bluffs, depending on the terrain you're in. The big bulls like being up there where they're secluded in their own little world. Finding both sheds is just lucky, you can pick up both sheds within 200-300 yards. Smaller bulls, they'll shed and they might not shed their other side till a week later. Where big bulls when they shed one, they usually shed the other one in 24 hours. If you'll watch that bull and he sheds one side, and he sheds the other. Let him sit there until he's bald. If you can pattern him and then maybe you can get lucky and find that trail he comes and goes from the bluffs he's working and you'll find both them. We find a lot of our sheds on fence lines, like up on there on those big rocky bluffs we elk hunt, you'll see where there's a 6 foot ledge where they have to jump on and you'll see where they jump down onto that next platform and you'll see both sheds will be laying right there.
Hey thanks for the quick tips on shed hunting RJ.
