Update on Winter Wheat Conditions

Today Syngenta’s Agronomic Service Representative Jeff Hopp give us an update of the state’s winter wheat condition.
Hopp: “What we are seeing around the state: last week we had the wheat coming out of a cold spell. We had lots of snow across different parts of region as well as rain — which was really needed. But also colder temperatures so the wheat was really in more of a slow down or a dormant stage. We started receiving warmer temperatures last Tuesday and having conditions dry out in the field. The wheat really began to take off again. A lot of field activity commenced. So we had more of the top dressing going on as well as herbicide and fungicide applications going on. A key thing for the growers to consider is looking at using a good herbicide to manage the weeds that in the fields. Be sure that they are controlling green bridges which would be grasses. We are starting to hear a little bit of chatter out there of both aphids as well as mites. That are starting to make an appearance — both Barley Yellow Dwarf virus and the Wheat Streak Mosaic showing up.”
Tomorrow we will continue our conversation with Hopp.
