Oregon Wolf Issue & Sheep Grazing Prohibition

Oregon Wolf Issue & Sheep Grazing Prohibition. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

You already know the issue of the gray wolf is a hot one. The Oregon legislature last week passed a bill ratifying the delisting of wolves in Oregon. The bill was introduced by Republican proponents of delisting on behalf of the livestock and sports-hunting industries. The 17-11 Senate vote to pass HB 4040 follows the bill's passage in the House last month. Now the bill lands on Governor Brown's desk and groups like the Center for Biological Diversity are calling on the Governor to veto the bill, other groups such as the Oregon Cattleman's are urging her to sign.

A prohibition against grazing sheep in 70 percent of Idaho and Wyoming's Payette National Forest does not violate the law, according to a federal appeals ruling. The court upheld the decision in regards to the possibility of pneumonia being spread to wild, Big Horn Sheep. Livestock groups like the Idaho and Wyoming Wool Growers Association claim the U.S. Forest Service ignored key science and skewed data to uphold the ban of domestic sheep. Wyoming Wool Growers Executive Director Amy Hendrickson

HENDRICKSON: The appeals court did say that the forest service "may have" violated NEPA requirements for consultation with ARS but found that since the forest service has generalized the understanding of what ARS would have said anyway that there was no harm, therefore didn't rule whether or not they violated - just said that they "may have."
