Sale of Heifers Increase Scholarship Endowment

An Oregon County Cattlemen’s group is working hard to help students in their county pursing degrees in agriculture with scholarships — and they are doing it in a big way. Oregon Umatilla County Cattlemen’s Association President Clint Sexson shares the results of their unique way to raise fund for their county scholarship endowment. They sold 36 head of heifers via Superior Livestock Auction sale last week
Sexson: “We were really pleased and blessed with the sale of the heifers. There were 34 spring heifers in the one lot that bought $2,500 a piece and two fall calving heifers that brought $3,200 a piece. So we were pleased and that total is just over $90,000. I think that the monumental difference it will make is that it will increase that endowment fund to a point that the interest will bring more money to our scholarships that we will give out to students. Hopefully that will help alleviate some of the expense that they have to deal with as far as education goes.”
Sexson says that in the past they have given out one or two scholarships for about $1,200 at their annual banquet in December. They hope that they will be either to add the number of scholarships given or increase the amount given this year.
He added that this amazing fundraiser would not have been possible without the ranchers who donated the heifers, the Double M Ranch who donated the feed and the yardage for the donated heifers. As well as a big thank you to the buyers of the heifers.
