Spotty Rain & Floyd Remembered

Spotty Rain & Floyd Remembered. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Elson Floyd served as WSU's president for just eight years when he passed away on June 20 after a long battle with colon cancer at the young age of just 59. Washington State University officials are hosting a celebration of life service for Floyd this afternoon at 3pm at the college's Beasley Coliseum. The service will also be streamed online.

Brief, spotty showers across the northwest have done little ease either the drought or wildfires. The Tri-Cities area in Washington got its first measurable precipitation in 96 days on Monday evening although the accompanying lightning storm started a bevy of small grass fires that had to be dealt with. Moisture is something the west desperately needs and according to meteorologist Brad Rippey.

RIPPEY: We hope to get enough seasonal rain and snow beginning in late September and October to at least knock down the wildfire threat.

But even though things are expected to shift, don’t hold you breath.

RIPPEY: The jet stream begins to move southward along the northwestern coast of the United States, we do expect some seasonal changes begin to take place and that should start to tamp down the wildfire threat in the northwest beginning at some point during September and that’s when the focus will shift back to California.

That’s today’s Northwest Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
