The Need for Strong Rural WiFi is Worldwide

For anyone who lives, works or surfs the web in a rural area —- there can be headaches and frustration if you are unable to connect to a high speed wifi. In speaking to one of the Nuffield Farm Scholars from Australia, the importance of strong wifi availability is critical regardless of what continent you farm on.Jock Graham Southern New South Wales in Australia he has a mixed farm with sheep, beef and crops as well as a quarry. He shares more about the rural communication challenge Down under.
Graham: “In Australia you only have cell service and it is very expensive and you need to share it with everyone who might drop pass. In business it is very hard to use even a cloud service. It is not something — and the only other option is satellite. As a user I can’t do that running my business so we will really need to connect to a cell-top tower or a connected service which is what this technology allows. It allows 50 kilometers, 60 kilometers, 70 kilometers in straight line sight and you can connect farms up and share — it is just all about getting to the best connection point.”
Graham says farmer ingenuity is the same throughout the globe when it comes to getting creative when finding a solution to a problem.
Graham: “We use solar-power towers to relay the signal. Farmers can do a lot of things if they put their minds to it. They put poles in the grounds for fences — they can put poles in the ground for telecommunication.”
