Weekly Regional Hay Market Update

This is the first of the summer season’s Hay Report on the Farm and Ranch Report. Each week we will review the previous week’s hay reports throughout the region. USDA Grain and Livestock Reporter Greg Sanders begins with the Columbia Basin Hay report from last week
Sanders: “We had 8100 tons of hay trade. Compared to last Friday, new crop premium supreme alfalfa was steady. Trade was slow to moderate on new crop alfalfa and active on new crop first cutting Timothy. Most interests this week were busy with second cutting alfalfa. Demand was good for new crop high testing alfalfa and dairy and horse Timothy for export. Light to moderate on other grades. Alfalfa supreme large square bales at $230 and that was tarped. Timothy grass for premium export hay $240 on large square bales.
In Idaho compared to previous week, new crop premium high moisture alfalfa was steady. Trade was slow last week, as recent rains made putting up high quality hay difficult. Demand was moderate to good. Premium large square bales alfalfa with excessive moisture sold for $154.63 per ton
In Oregon, prices trended generally steady when compared to the previous week. Trade activity and demand picked up a little last week. In Central Oregon large square premium alfalfa bales sold at $164.67 per ton. In Klamath Basin small square premium alfalfa sold for $230 per ton. There were no new sales confirmed in Eastern Oregon or Harney County.
