Time of Year For Junior Livestock Shows

Time of Year For Junior Livestock Shows

I love this time year, spring is here and the promise of summer will soon be upon us. This is also the time of year that hardworking youth - -both 4-Hers and FFA students glean the fruits of their labor at junior livestock shows around the region. Last week I went to the Spokane Junior Livestock to visit with old and new friends and watch members of my son’s 4-H club show their animals. I spoke with Liberty Knights 4-Her Amelia Suksdorf about showing her Angus heifer named Not Margaret. This was her second year showing and she shares her results in the showering.
Suksdorf: “I got third in market and the fourth in fitting and showing. I think I did pretty good. I kept control of her at least. She only got away from me once and that is pretty good.”
As I had witnessed at the pre-show in late April, Not Margaret had some stubborn tendencies but Amelia stuck it out with gumption and grit. In best 4-Her fashion, Amelia has already been thinking about how she can improve next year. She continues
Suksdorf: “Next year I’m going to try work setting her feet a little bit more accurately. Then I I’m going to try and practice walking her into the stance.”
I asked what her favorite part of showing was.
Suksdorf: “I like fitting her. That is always fun. It’s like getting ready. You know she is all pretty and you did it. It is all great.”

Thanks to the many businesses who strongly support our junior livestock shows around the region.
