Why Consider AI?

Why Consider AI?

Obviously, with record high cattle prices, the more pounds of beef on the hoof to sell, the better the profit opportunity is for ranchers. One way to increase pounds is through improved genetics and yet less than 10 percent of commercial beef herds use AI in their breeding program.
Performix Nutrition Systems Animal Nutritionist and Consultant Marty Gill says
Gill: “The use of artificial insemination or AI is obviously a long-term, proven, very productive technology that is still of to-date very underutilized in the commercial beef cow-calf industry. I think that is something that producers need to look at to improve their genetics and their bottom line. Currently there are many proven simple heat detection or heat synchronization programs and protocols on the market that are available. When you do an analysis — it is very cost-effective when compared to natural bull breeding — basically giving some of the bull prices we are seeing today. I’m currently working with a lot of operations including my own and seeing costs somewhere in the $20 to $40 per head neighborhood for a complete synchronization, semen arm-service program and that is a very competitive number against natural bull breeding.”
We will continue our conversation with Gill next Wednesday about the benefits of using AI in your beef herd.
