Safe Farming & Farmers Helped Settle Port Issue
Safe Farming & Farmers Helped Settle Port Issue. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.National Ag Day is coming up on March 18 and with it comes a push from the National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. The Centers spokesperson, Scott Heiberger says they want to highlight how important the health and wellbeing of the people in agriculture is to our whole society. They have produced a number of YouTube videos about how to stay safe while working in agriculture, forestry and fishing.
Everyone is still keeping a close eye on the ports even though a tentative deal was struck just over a week ago. There has been a lot of praise given to the Department of Labor's Secretary Perez but Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says there was another group that gave Perez a big boost.
VILSACK: He did tell me the thing that was most compelling to him and the parties as he negotiated and debated all the issues were the stories he received from farmers about the impact that the port strike had been having and will likely continue to have for a while given the backlog of items that have to be shipped in and out. We still continue to see strong export numbers and notwithstanding the port challenges, we're still going to continue to see robust exports.
That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
