The University of Idaho has a series of field days this month for irrigated and dryland grain growers. On Wednesday irrigated growers can check out the trials for spring barley and spring wheat at the Idaho Falls field day. On Thursday July 14th in Burley the field day will emphasize spring and winter variety trials on barley and wheat. The University Extension has the information on times and field day locations.
Also on Wednesday there's a U of I field day at Rockland for growers interested in rained winter wheat. Ed Souza says it's a good chance for farmers to see the wheat prior to harvest and to talk about varieties to plant later this year.
SOUZA "There are hard wheat's that we have recommended for quite awhile. Utah 100, Gary which is a hard white wheat, DW which is a new release out of the University of Idaho about two years ago. All of those have great resistance to stripe rust and the more traditional diseases of dryland winter wheat like drought and snow mold and dwarf bunt."
On July 28th in Soda Springs, dryland growers can check out the university field trials and barley breeding plots. Evan Hayes who farms in that area and is the current president of the National Barley Growers Association will also be there to talk about local and national issues.
