High Cattle Prices May Make Cattle Rustling More Tempting

Recently in the region, there have been an uptick in reports of missing or stolen cattle. In Southern Idaho — one rancher has lost 25 pair and another is missing 41 pair — and in Oregon there have been reports of new calves being stolen.
Washington State Department of Ag’s Livestock Inspection Program Support Supervisor Kris Budde says the theft may be difficult to prevent — however, it is important in the recovery to have permanent markings to identify your cattle as yours.
Budde: “In our eyes, the best way we feel that we can return your cattle in a case of theft or missing is the use of a hot brand or freeze brand as you know those markings are permanent.”
Budde shares what ranchers should do if they have missing cattle.
Budde: “The first thing they should do is to contact their local sheriff’s department. And of course, the contact your local brand inspector. We will work in conjunction with the local sheriff’s office.”
He adds
Budde: “I think it is important for cattlemen to know that their local brand inspector is there to protect. We are an asset protection and theft deterrent. It is important to find out who your local brand inspector is — introduce yourself to them, talk to them. If you are indeed missing cattle — whether you just think they are missing or you aren’t quite sure — it is important that you give us that information so that we can get that information out. In case that they come through the sales yard, or a feed lot or inspection that we might be doing in the field as well.”
