Oregon Wolf Update

It has been a while since we checked in with Oregon rancher and one of the founders of the Oregon Wolf Education Kerry Tienhaara on the recent wolf activity across Eastern Oregon.
Tienhaara says May has been a busy month for Oregon’s Department of Fish and Wildlife depredation investigations.
Tienhaara: “We had a cow and a calf investigated out on the Imnaha Divide on the fifth. On the 17th another cow was down and investigated. Then on the 20th a calf just north of Enterprise up on the flat was investigated. All three investigations were not confirmed to be wolf depredation even though it was questionable there was —- I would say — evidence to the country.”
Two kills were identified as “other” and the third was determined to have been killed by a coyote. I asked how many depredation investigations have happened so far this year, Tienhaara shares
Tienhaara: “So there was three investigations in May, two in April — all in Wallowa County and all again on private property. Baker County on the 30th of March. Another one at the end of February in Wallowa County, and one in January. So eight investigations in the New Year.”
Interestingly enough there was ONLY the one at the end of January — which was Tienhaara’s neighbor’s ewe — confirmed as wolf depredation.
