06/13/05 Idaho forage handbook, third edition

Horse owners, hay growers and small farm owners can order a comprehensive 99-page handbook that`s well-stocked with current information on forages, their management and use. "Idaho Forage Handbook," the University of Idaho Extension publication was previously published in 1975 and 1990. In addition to alfalfa, corn and cereal grains, editor Glenn Shewmaker says it covers new and improved grasses and legumes for dryland, irrigated and wetland environments. SHEWMAKER "Complete manual now that covers all the way from the seed to how it's utilized in the animals, horses, dairy animals, beef cattle and sheep." Grasses for pasture and conservation use, the legumes and forbs are all updated in this third edition of the handbook. SHEWMAKER "And it gives the seeding rates, the methods of seeding, how you might want to mix those. We had help from the NCRS to do this and a lot of authors, a lot of contributors." The handbook also includes chapters on leasing arrangements and production costs and the information is specific to Idaho. Its ten dollars plus shipping and orders can be made through the University of Idaho by phone or e-mail calspubs@uidaho.edu. Today's Idaho Ag News Bill Scott
