Mobility Authority Preserving Declining Bee Population. Talk about a commitment to combating colony collapse disorder and the ominous disappearance of so many bees throughout the world, some folks down in Texas are taking major steps to preserve honeybees. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is relocating an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 honeybees from a large hive along US 183 in the Bergstrom Expressway Environmental Study corridor. The idea is that officials are going to build a new road to improve access to the airport in Austin, Texas and that would mean removing the tree. Here is spokesperson Rick L'Amie : "We are the very preliminary stage of environmental studies and looking at that corridor to improve and enhance access to the airport." They don't want to remove the tree while the bees are still living in it. The Mobility Authority hired Oakley Family Apiaries to safely and humanely relocate the bees 80 miles north to an apiary near Robinson, Texas. The hive is located approximately 12 feet above the ground in a Live Oak tree along US 183, not far from the Montopolis Bridge. It is estimated that the hive has been in that location for several years.
