Agribusiness Update for Wednesday 11/6/13
This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin...Reser's is voluntarily expanding its October 22 recall of refrigerated ready-to-eat products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled refrigerated ready-to-eat products were distributed nationwide and Canada. There are no confirmed illnesses associated with these products. The recalled products were manufactured at the Topeka, KS salad manufacturing facility.
The House is in recess this week - but House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson said he, Farm Bill Conference Committee Chair Frank Lucas, Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow and Senate Ag Committee Ranking Member Thad Cochran plan to hold closed-door farm bill discussions this week. Peterson said negotiators would like to get the farm bill wrapped up by Thanksgiving - which would require an agreement soon.
A U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a temporary injunction barring the USDA from providing horse meat inspection services to three companies. The order comes after a U.S. District Judge in New Mexico on Friday threw out a lawsuit, which the Humane Society of the United States and other animal protection groups had filed in July, that sought to permanently halt the slaughter of horses.
