Choosing Cattle

Choosing Cattle

I’m KayDee Gilkey and welcome to Open Range. Here’s Greg with today’s report.

I’m Greg Martin with the AgriBeef Minute. Tom Hill is a cattle buyer and he spends some time talk about getting ready for a big bull sale and the things that he looks for.

HILL: First of all it’s important to select an operation that has similar goals and priorities as you do in your commercial operation and that you have confidence in the program and the longevity of that program and the service that that bull suppliers going to provide to you as a long term customer.

One of the main things he looks for in a bull is longevity.

HILL: We’re talking about traits such as foot and toe shape. Some angularity and flex in terms of their joints. Tightness of sheath. All those kinds of questions are certainly going to add to longevity as well as being sure that you find bulls that have been properly grown out relative to condition and not over fat.

The choice is really going to depend on your operation and your needs.

HILL: At the end of the day you need to have cattle that genetically fit the environment and feed resources of the commercial cattle operation. Every operation is going to have a different feed resource

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m KayDee Gilkey.
