On a hot, dark night in early August, a multitude of lightning bolts struck the foothills and mountains north of Mountain Home, igniting numerous wildfires. Grass, shrubs and timber were tinder-dry after months of no rain and below-normal snowpack, so the fires took off in a hurry. The Idaho Rangeland Resource’s Life on the Range film crew did a story about the dramatic, huge wildfires near Mountain Home that burned 280,000 acres in a matter of about two weeks, featuring many ICA members. The crew documented the impact of the fires on ranchers and rangelands, and explored how these huge conflagrations might be avoided in the future—watch their video at lifeontherange.com. Wyatt Prescott, executive director of the Idaho Cattlemen’s Association: “This is a video that showcases the devastation that this summer’s fires actually caused to not only ranchers but to the habitat Including the whole ecosystem out there that not only cattle but wildlife and recreational lists all depend upon. 280,000 acres burned in a matter of two weeks. It is showcasing a lot of those ranchers and how they have dealt with the struggle documenting the fires and some of the compounding factors that caused those players.”
