7-11 SS Horseback Photography

Hunting and fishing wildlife photographer Gilbert Herndon talks about one of the perils of his job. Believe it or not it is a matter of priorities. One time we were riding horses while elk hunting out in Colorado and Wayne was ahead of me on a horse and his wife was between us there and we are writing up a hill and I am carrying a 20 pound camera trying to tape some stuff as we go while riding a horse and the horse stumbles and I fall off and the 1st thing that hits the ground is the camera and it sounds like a rock cracking on the ground. Wendy hollers at Wayne and says Gilbert fell off the horse and the 1st thing he said is, well is the camera all right? I yelled back, yeah I’m okay. Priorities, yeah priorities, the camera is more work than me, I suppose. So with those kind of priorities, why in the world would you want to be a wildlife photographer? Well I grew up on a quail plantation myself, it was not run as a quail plantation anymore but I grew up in the woods and I didn’t have any friends. My friends were the woods. That is my church, I guess you would say, and being out in nature means a lot to me. I think a lot more people need to do that. I think they would find more peace with themselves instead of getting caught up in society, so nature is the way to go I think.
