Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture shared new information that could matter to farmers and families across the Southeast. USDA announced expanded enrollment for the 2026 Dairy Margin Coverage program and new plans to purchase U.S. grown food for nutrition programs and food banks.

According to the agency, the Dairy Margin Coverage program helps dairy producers manage the ups and downs between milk prices and feed costs. Enrollment for 2026 opened January 12 and runs through February 26. One of the updates raises the top Tier 1 coverage level to six million pounds, and producers now have the option to lock in coverage for up to six years at a reduced premium.

USDA officials say the changes are part of a broader effort to strengthen the farm safety net. Agriculture Secretary Brooke L. Rollins also recently met with specialty crop growers to talk about workforce challenges and federal actions tied to H 2A labor costs.

In addition, USDA plans to purchase up to $80 million in almonds, grape juice, pistachios, and raisins for distribution through nutrition assistance programs.
