Welcome to Vine to Wine, this is your host Linda Moran and today we are answering questions from our email. Recently a listener wrote to ask "We are getting married soon and we were asked by the caterer which type of champagne glass we wanted saucer, trumpet or flute?" We aren't having expensive champagne just a simple sparkling wine. Which glass is best?"
When determining a glass for your wedding toast I recommend ruling out the saucer style of glass. This is the shallow almost bowl looking glass. Save that to serve sorbet or fruit in. Select between either the Flute or the Trumpet. If you are setting the tables with the glasses, the Trumpet is truly an attractive look. It is the tall and "V" shaped glass. The flute, which has a tubular looking vessel sitting atop the stem, is actually a bit better glass for drinking champagne and sparkling wine. Since we know everyone is there to wish you well, it is doubtful that the focus will be on the glasses so go for what you like, after all it is your wedding.
Other listeners have had questions about wine glasses and the need for so many different types. Thankfully most reputable wine glass producers make an all purpose red wine glass and an all purpose white wine glass which have a combination of the necessary shapes and characteristics to enjoy your wine. These glasses are usually reasonably priced and their versatility make them perfect if you have limited storage.
