It is early May and Freida Lee of New Plymouth is expecting quite a crowd.  “It is a busy day on Sunnyside Farms. Aren’t we glad it isn’t windy like it was yesterday.”  Freida Lee, her husband Art and their son Galen and his wife Cindy, own and operate Sunnyside Farms. It’s mainly a dairy but is also a row crop operation. Asparagus is just one of their crops,  which this time of year, they sell at a roadside stand until June when the crop runs out the season.  Oh and by the way, today is mammogram day  at the asparagus stand.  This is a Freida Lee tradition for the last 14 years. “ For the mammogram buses probably 13 or 14. 40 people signed up. That’s a lot isn’t it?  Yes and we have had to turn people away this year.  People have called and called.” Son Galen says it is an annual offering at the asparagus stand that means a lot to mom.  “This is something she does every year. It came from the fact that my last wife had breast cancer and died of it.  My mother’s message to everybody is get your mammograms.”
