5-3 IAN Bee Protest

5-3 IAN Bee Protest

When does regulation become too much? Well, let’s take the birds and the bees with a strong emphasis on bees. You know it is amazing how City Hall can get involved in things and mess them up. The world of agriculture has been severely upset by a phenomenon called colony collapse disorder in populations of honeybees worldwide. In response to declining numbers of bees which are critical to pollinating all kinds of crops, there have been rural and urban movements to raise more honeybees. This movement has been taken on at industrial levels but also by hobbyists. What a wonderful undertaking, except… Here comes City Hall saying wait a minute, not so much on the honey bee side. Well for every action there is a reaction and one of them came from local bee clubs as told by bee keeper and super enthusiast Bill Ahaus: “Here in Boise there was an ordinance against having bees within a certain distance of somebody else’s property. So the bee club gathered there forces and went down to the city  counsel and they changed it. So we are allowed to have bees now. You can have honeybees in the city and it has become very, very popular.”
