3-5 IAN Farm to School
The purpose of the USDA Farm to School Grant Program is to assist eligible entities in implementing farm to school programs that improve access to local foods in eligible schools. On an annual basis, USDA awards up to $5 million in competitive grants for training, supporting operations, planning, purchasing equipment, developing school gardens, developing partnerships, and implementing farm to school programs. I chatted with USDA spokesperson Jo Lynne Seufer: “ Does that mean we are trying to bring local produce, open up the doors to bring local produce to schools and even institutions like hospitals and nursing homes. We want the doors to be opened to our farmers to direct market local produce to local institutions. Isn’t that a win win? Absolutely. It is also cutting down on transportation of food.
