Cranberries Down

Cranberries Down

Cranberries Down. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.
It won’t be long before we are popping the turkey in the oven and sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner and passing around the cranberries. This year’s cranberry crop is expected to be down a bit. Northwest Ag’s Lacy Gray has more.

GRAY: This years Oregon and Washington cranberry crop got off to a late start due to the long cold and wet spring. That delayed crop progress in some areas. The 2012 Washington crop is forecast at 142,000 barrels, a significant increase over 2011 production of 115,700 barrels. Oregon’s crop condition and yield is expected to be higher than Washington State. But the overall forecast across the nation for the 2012 cranberry crop is 7.68 million barrels, down less than 1 percent from 2011.

Thanks Lacy. Other cranberry growing regions have been reporting limited impact by the summer drought. Some areas like New Jersey and Massachusetts saw some heat stress required additional irrigation due to some hot, dry weather. What will prices do for the consumer...well that is anyones guess but prices do tend to go up the closer you get to the holidays.
