Dr. Richard Koenig has recently been named as the new director for Washington State Extension. Until his selection, he had served as the Chair of Washington State University’s Department of Crop and Soil Sciences.

The new Associate Dean of College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences and Director of WSU Extension Dr. Richard Koenig shares more.

Koenig: “The first steps I’ve taken is to try to learn more about the organization. It is an enormous organization with 700-plus employees and more than 10,000 volunteers statewide in Washington -- just in the learning phase right now.”

Extension has 39 local offices across Washington, one in each county.
Dr. Koenig shares what he hopes to accomplish in his first year in his new position.

Keonig: “My first year, I hope would be to see extension through remainder of this transition. It has undergone an enormous of reorganization restructuring. All of the indicators right now are positive in terms of the budget and where were are going. We are starting to do more hiring so it is really a good time to come into the position because it does allow a lot of opportunities moving forward. I really get a sense of optimism among the faculty and staff in Extension right now as to where the organization is going and can go.”
