8-20 SS Hunting Ungulates
Differences in hunting ungulates.
I have never hunted for a mule deer. Whitetails and elk yes... but no mulies. So I thought I would ask an expert in hunting all 3. I chatted with Dale Denney an outfitter and guide who owns Bear Paw Outfitters in Colville, WA. “let’s compare, just for fun, you are a hunter and you have your choice of whitetail, elk or mule deer, in your mind is the strategy for hunting the 3 of them identical, do they behave the same in the wilderness or does a muley offer a different challenge? they are all an entirely different. The way they live is different, the country may overlap, you might find all 3 in the same country but they survive different ways, they eat different things, they have different habits just staying alive. A white tail lives in a much smaller core zone than the other 2, a mule deer may live in a very small area but he is readily willing to pick up and move on little further away. An elk will move even further away. Given the size of a mule deer’s years, is there hearing more sensitive than the other ungulates? They claim because of the size and shape of a mule deer’s years, that he has exceptional hearing.
