5-31 Kayak Chinook
If you remember the Ernest Hemingway story called “The Old Man and the Sea”, the old man got towed around by a huge Marlin. We’re going to do that Chinook style . Tommy Mansfield loves to fish for salmon but he does it in a very unusual way as is evidenced by my conversation with him. “Tommy you are an experienced and enthusiastic outdoorsman and I know you live up in an area that I think is the most beautiful place in the world, that would be Seattle and you have a place overlooking Puget Sound so my guess is that you really enjoy doing some salmon fishing out there, correct? Tell me a little bit about that experience as a fisherman in Puget Sound. What I have really gotten into these days, Sparky, is kayak fishing. I try to get out there in my kayak and to be honest with you I haven’t hooked into any monsters yet but I’m waiting until July 15 when the Chinook season opens, I’m hoping to get into a 30 pounder or something that will tell me around in the kayak. That is something that I am very much looking forward to here. Most anglers around here where the season begins depending on the various areas, the Chinook season begins July 15 and the big Kings and that is certainly what I am after as well. So the equivalent of a dogsled run, you hook into a 30 pound shutout ( laughter) well that is the plan, I am hoping for a rooster tail and I have gotten into some 10 to 12 pound Silvers but to get into a 25 to 30 pounds Chinook, it will tow me around and yes I am looking forward to it very much.
