5-10 SS Huge Tom 1

Another father and son turkey hunt with a different outcome. Last week we heard a wonderful story about a dad and his young son getting his 1st turkey. This week, venerable contributor to the show, Josh Mills, tells me that he too went hunting for turkeys with his dad.  One would certainly assume that the term venerable means experienced and experience typically brings success. Well listen in, I know you’ll find this entertaining because Josh is a great storyteller.  “I wasn’t able to go with my great hunting father, Fay Mills for opening day of turkey season but I always ended up going out the 2nd weekend so we went out to a piece of property we have access to. We pull up at dark 30, it was probably 5 AM, about 20 min. before shooting light and we step out of the truck and in all directions there were gobbles. So we picked the closest point where we thought we knew where they were going. So we sprinted across the field and I got set up in the trees because sometimes the birds come through the trees and sometimes they just go across the field so my dad set up at the edge of the field. Well, just about light you can hear the bird gobbling its head off in the tree and there are hens with him and there are little hen clucks about 150 yards away. Right at light, the hands fly down and probably about 5 min. later, woosh, this massive shape comes down out of the trees and lands and it is about 150 yards from us. I could tell that that was the big boss Tom. I knew which way they were going and I went over towards my dad and he wanted me to be the shooter that day to make sure that we would get the bird.” So far so good, but wait until you hear what happened tomorrow.
