1-9 SS Ice Fishing Season

1-9 SS Ice Fishing Season

Grumpy old men do it but so do a lot of avid fishermen throughout the Northwest. I may be a grumpy old man, but I’ve never done it so when it was dropped in my lap I was fascinated. Enough mystery. We’re talking ice fishing. I certainly knew that there was a lot of ice fishing that goes on around the Northwest but it’s one of those deals where if you have not experienced it it’s kind of out of sight and out of mind, until that is, the subject comes up during a conversation about something else. That happened to me, my interest was piqued, so I called up Marcus Williams from Sportsman’s Warehouse. 1st question, what is the icefishing season?  “As far as ice fishing seasons are concerned, it starts as soon as there is thick enough ice. It’s not like there is an opening day or anything like that. So any time there is ice, you are legitimate? Yes pretty much. I am not aware of anything that says otherwise. Everybody has their own personal comfort level as far as how thick is thick and how thick is thin. But most guys figure that 4 or 5 inches of good hard ice is pretty reasonable. This year we have been really fortunate. With the cold temperatures we had earlier and no snow and no rain on top of the ice it froze very solid and really hard. Some guys were comfortable getting out there on even thinner ice but I do not recommend that because it can be a real liability.
